Don’t Flush Your Drugs Down The Toilet

Remember when you’d hear a loud knock on the door and you’d scurry to the bathroom and flush the drugs down the toilet (well, I once saw that in a movie … )? This morning I spoke to Mike Duteau, registered pharmacist and the director of pharmacy operations for Kinney Drugs.  He said that in the old days we were told to flush our expired medicines down the toilet. However,  it was discovered that some of the drugs would end up in our drinking water.  So PLEASE don’t do it anymore!  Here’s a better way: this Saturday come to Kinney Drugs Medicine Collection Day at the Kinney Drugs Store located at the intersection of Electronics Parkway and 7th North Street in Liverpool (right next to the Holiday Inn). Clean out your medicine cabinet and drop off your old, expired or unused medications and they will properly destoy it to help prevent accidental poisonings, substance abuse and environmental pollution.

A SUNNY TASTE!

A HOT time in the ol’ town! We ate, we rocked, we honored the lacrosse team and we rocked some more at Bank of America’s Taste of Syracuse presented by P&C Foods! Friday night’s Syracuse New Times SAMMY Awards Show on the Main Stage; then on Saturday it was Paige’s Butterfly Run in the morning and we rocked with Molly Hatchet and the Marshall Tucker Band at night. Can’t wait for next year!

Hey…feels like summer!

Wow…June already, and here comes one of my favorite events…Taste of Syracuse. What a great couple of days! Please join us Friday  and Saturday…Sunny 102’s tent is a the corner of Water and Franklin…we’ll all be there and of course, Big Mike will be hosting the Sammy Awards on the main stage Friday night and emcee-ing Paige’s Butterfly Run on Saturday morning, sooo much to see and do.

I’m sorry that my wife will not be here to take in the event, as it’s one of her faves. As I have mentioned in previous posts she is serving a tour of duty in Iraq with her co-workers from The 174th Fighter Wing. She has been over there almost a week now…the kids are doing alright, however, my youngest, Nicholas(21 months) doesn’t understand at all, he just knows Mommy isn’t around. It’s tough hearing him wander from room to room calling “Momma”. If you’ll indulge me, I will be writing about all of this over the summer, as a way to keep it all in perspective…therapy. Please keep my wife and all of the members of the military in your thoughts and prayers.

Oh, one other thing, while we’re on the subject. I was over by the Korean/Vietnam war memorial this afternoon on my lunch break and was disgusted to see that many people use it as a trash recepticle. There were empty rum and beer bottles, hotdogs wrappers, even potatoes! Speaking as a spouse of a Vet, is it too much to expect it and other Vet memorials be kept up? Very disappointing to say the least.

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

So yesterday, I get off the air at about 3, I shoot out to the local fast food joint for some lunch… and I see something quite interesting.  It’s a school bus, stopped, to let the kids eat, and there are nine kids hanging around the bus smoking cigarettes.  Nine!  I counted.  Which of course brings to mind the news that the price of cigs is going up $1.25 today in NYS.  Health officials and anti-smoking advocates say that the higher taxes on cigarettes help people choose to quit.  That’s what they say.  I don’t know if it’s true.

I know that this is a sensitive subject, and many have a strong opinion.  Here’s what I think.  I felt very sad that a high percentage of those kids were unfortunately destined to smoke all of their lives, and several of their lives will likely be cut short from it.  Think of the money they will waste in their lifetime– on poison that is already starting to waste away their young bodies.

I feel incredibly lucky that I never started smoking… but I know I’m no saint when it comes to healthy habits.  Hey… I was at a burger joint!  Nevertheless…  if this cigarette tax increase stops even just a few kids from picking up the habit, I’m all for it.

On a lighter note… listen this week for the Lunchtime Reward at noon… you can win a special M&Ms version of Monopoly from Comix Zone… and sundaes from Friendlys!  Hey, don’t you know, candy and ice cream are good for you!!!

Sex,City and me!

I sacrificed myself for all men on Saturday by going to see “Sex and the City”. There may have been two other guys in the theater with their wives, but I think they were handcuffed to their spouses(perhaps the only way they would go). I ,on the other hand, declared to the ticket taker, I was there with my wife for research. The movie is not bad, a 3 out of 5 for men, for women definately a 5. But, guys go with the wife, and use it  as a bargaining chip for something you may want,if you know what I mean!

On “Bridge Street” Tuesday, June 3rd

Our 9 Kids Challenge team has been working on achieving a healthier weight and lifestyle for a year. Did they accomplish their goal at their final weigh-in over the weekend? Find out. Also, give a gift of style when your friend heads down the aisle. It’s our $50 wedding challenge. And, what you can do now to make sure your air conditioning is ready to go before the summer heat wave hits! And we continue to count down to “Taste of Syracuse” with more delicious food, found at the Taste.

Big Mike: FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

This Tuesday at 12:30PM (and repeated at night on cable) I’ll be on WCNY-TV-channel 24’s Food For Thought. I’ll be creating a Tuna Salad (inspired by my friend Chef Gentile) while we talk about The SNT SAMMY AWARDS SHOW (I’ll be the emcee) coming up this Friday evening at Bank of Americ’a TASTE OF SYRACUSE presented by P&C.  Here’s the recipe … if you like tuna salad, you’ll love this:

BIG MIKE’S TUNA SALAD
14-16 oz Albacore Tuna in water (two 7oz cans are OK)
¼ cup Mayo (light Helmann’s)
1 tbs whole grain Dijon Mustard
¼ cup each of chopped fine Red Onion, Celery and Carrot
2 tbs Bread Crumbs
1 Apple (Granny Smith or tart) cut into small pieces
1 tbs each chopped fresh Mint and fresh Parsley (optional)
1 tbs Olive Oil
½ Lemon squeezed juice
Salt & Pepper to taste
¼ cup Craisins and ¼ cup Walnuts (chopped)
OR
a ½ cup (handful) of Sunny Cranberry Trail Mix (cranberries, almonds, golden raisins, sunflower kernels & pepitas)

DIRECTIONS: Mash the tuna and add the mayo, mustard, onion, celery, carrots, bread crumbs and mix it all up. Add the other ingredients and slightly toss to mix. Serve with Romaine on Whole Wheat Wrap, or stuff into Cored Tomato.
